Update on my last post... News just in that the Dunkin’ account has named Publicis agency, Leo Burnett, its new lead creative agency. Anomaly had the account for ONE year. Boy, nothing anomalous about that. Just par for the course. Where is Anomaly ½ when you need it?
The current state of the ad biz...
News today that Anomaly has laid off nearly 10% of its US staff due to a “significant reduction” in revenue from its Dunkin’ account, plus other pieces that are dropping off the lumbering carcass of what was once a decent agency. Founded in 2004, as per its name, they promised to create something which was indeed an anomaly... “A deviation from the norm.” At least they didn’t say “Agency of the future.” – Groan. They said they would charge reasonable fees. No commission or bumped up production fees. They also said that they didn’t want to become just another behemoth BDA. When they reached a head count of 100, they would create Anomaly 2, when that grew to 100 staff, they would create Anomaly 3. And so on. Great stuff, right? Unfortunately, none of it ever happened. Now it’s just a classic BDA. Same as all the others.

Cryptocurrency-focused Silvergate Capital stock plunged 40% this morning after the bank was forced to sell assets at a steep loss to cover about $8.1 billion in withdrawals during the collapse of crypto exchange FTX. The bank also laid off 40% of its staff, or about 200 employees. Finally, the company halted plans to launch its own digital currency. Here’s an idea... Why not buy a load of Der Trumpf NFT’s instead?

My good friend, Carole Sergeant points us in the direction of the news that Fay Weldon has just died. Even though known as a famous and prolific author she was initially a copywriter at Ogilvy & Mather, London, were she was credited with creating the long lasting campaigns “Unzip a banana” and “Go to work on an egg.” Another offering for a booze account the agency had — “Vodka makes you drunker quicker” — was rejected by her crusty bosses. She went on to find success as a television writer with the top-rated series “Upstairs, Downstairs,” about relationships between the “Nobs” and their servants. On a final note... Back in the sixties, there was a popular joke... Q: What do you do if your egg won’t start? A: Pull out the yoke!

This just in from the New York Times... Meta suffered a major defeat on Wednesday that could severely undercut its Facebook and Instagram ad biz after European Union regulators found it had illegally forced users to effectively accept personalized ads. The decision, including a fine of 390 million euros ($414 million), has the potential to require Meta to make costly changes to its advertising-based business in the European Union, one of its largest markets. Still, that’s pocket change to ZuckerNozzle... Or, at least it used to be back in the good old days.

I’ve never fully understood American football. Why you need separate teams for defense, offence, kicking, wanking, etc. etc. The size of the defensive players, and the brutality. Reflected in the news that Damar Hamlin, a 24-year-old player with the Buffalo Bills, is in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest during a Monday night game with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was actually dead for a few minutes, but the medics managed to bring him back. As Harvey Wasserman, who once played football as a wide receiver, said... “For all the focus on rules surrounding players, the essence of the game at all positions remains embedded in its violence, with the expectation of injury being virtually universal.”

As I commented on the site... Not a mention of ad legend George Lois! Shame!!! Bunch of Wankers.

Elon “King Twat” Musk’s troubles continue to mount with the news that Tesla quarterly deliveries fell short of market estimates on Monday, held back by ongoing logistical issues and falling demand concerns that rounded off a tumultuous 2022 for the "King Twat" led firm which has lost 65% of its market value in 2022. No doubt we’ll be hearing shortly that he’s flogged several billion dollar’s worth of Tesla stock to keep his Twitter empire afloat. Even though he has promised not to do that... Just like he promised to step down as CEO.
