Both Tom Messner and Lower Depths (Truly AdScam Princes) make admirably insightful and humorous comments on my Jerry “I sell veggies by the sea” Della Famina and Mike “Make mine a double” Crapo posts of yesterday. Although in one, LD describes Ogilvy as “Sir David.” The sad truth is that in spite of his handling the British Tourist Board account, and doing pro bono work for a couple of British charities for years, the highest honor he ever received from the British government was a CBE in 1967, even though he readily admitted his lifelong ambition was to be awarded a Knighthood. Back in his heyday ad men were not seemed reputable enough to deserve such honors. Now, every other fucker in British advertising is a Knight - Sorrell, Lowe – And Maurice Saatchi is a fucking Barron. Well, the Cockney gits got Maggie elected a few times, so I guess that’s a form of payola. Too bad they can’t make David a Lord posthumously… We should do something about it. Wadaya think? He would fucking love that!
It's all in Ken's wonderful book!
