Seems like there's a shitstorm over at Agency Spy about Paul Tilley's suicide, with a lot of people blaming Spy, Lewis Lazare, and me for this guys decision to throw himself off the roof of the Fairmont Hotel. I even had an email from someone claiming to be a relative telling me I should be ashamed of myself. All because I did a post on January 16th talking about the troubles at DDB Chicago and quoting part of a Tilley memo... "too many of you are only doing good work. And some of you are doing work that simply isn't good enough." To which my response was... Fuck. That'll make the troops sit up, not to mention rapidly getting their books in shape!... And if anyone thinks that's enough to make someone kill themselves, then they need serious fucking help... I can't speak for Agency spy or Lewis Lazare but I have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, I've said far worse about others, some of whom are good friends of mine. This blog is about how fucked up the ad biz is, calling people out who do asinine things is what I do. I will continue to do it. I would suggest that some of the people who wrote stupid comments on Agency Spy (and who will no doubt do so on AdScam) should think before pounding the keyboard, then read Orwell's comment at the top of this blog, and always remember what Howard Gossage said... "The only people who care about advertising are the people in advertising." It's just fucking advertising and I don't think for one moment it's ever caused anyone's death.
