Loved the comments from Tom and Bob regarding the wonderful George Lois... So, many stories. Here's a couple. When George was the "L" in PKL (Pappert, Koenig & Lois) in the sixties doing great work for Xerox and others. Everyone in the biz called it "Stillman's East" after the famous West side gym (in those days gyms were dingy, smelly sweaty places where boxers worked out. Not the fucking trendy places full of poseur's they are now.) PKL was on Third avenue and George had a tendency to punch out anyone he disagreed with. Hence the name. Oh, and Julian Koenig alway had a limo waiting at the front door at midday to get him to the "Big A" in time for the first race! We all know the famous one about George standing in an open 20th floor window and threatening to jump out if the client didn't buy his ad. But my favorite is how he had a permanent table at the Four Seasons where he would lunch clients while drawing layouts on the $500 pure linen tablecloths. At the end of the meal the waiter would wrap the cloth and give it to him. Obviously, this impressed the shit out of the clients and they unfailingly bought everything he sold them... Ahhh, the good old days. Today it's Power Point, MBA's and BDA's... Plus most of the work really sucks and no one is enjoying themselves. All these inside stories will be revealed in my next book... "The Ubiquitous Persuaders." Look for it early next year. Buy it, or I'll jump out of the fucking window!
The client wouldn't buy the campaign, so I beat the shit out of him!
