Yesterday I posted about Ogilvy’s search for Trumpeter Swans, as distinct from the Poisoned Dwarf’s grubbing around for Grey Swans. I am reminded of the two times I met David, (it’s all in Confessions of a Mad Man) once in 1963, when I was a snot nosed youth fresh off the Queen Mary, and again 30 years later when I was freelancing at Ogilvy. On both occasions his parting remark was exactly the same… “Never forget, the function of advertising is selling.” What a guy. Of all my numerous awards (he said modestly) the one I’m most proud of is “The David Ogilvy Award” for an IBM campaign back in the nineties.
I still prefer George!
