In case you missed it, last Friday, AdAge, ran a copy of the memo Jeff Goodby sent to all GS+P’ers explaining the loss of Chevy and the demise of Commonwealth as a joint venture with McCann. I urge you to read it. If you already have, read it again. It is a true reflection of what a gentleman Jeff is. I say this with full disclosure that Jeff is a friend and we regularly correspond. Having said that, I also admit to regularly corresponding with fucktards and douchenozzles. Undeniable proof I am a fucking Prince. As I have said in previous posts, most BDA and BDHC Chief Executives would have left the poor fuckers in Detroit to sink or swim on their own. Jeff fought for them to be retained on the payroll and McCann agreed (for how long might be a subject of some conjecture.) What will happen with the down-town Detroit premises GS+P committed to is another question. Brent Bouchez has a very insightful comment about how all the GM brands are devolving back to old line auto agencies; because the reign of Joel was a temporary aberration that would inevitably pass. Reminds me of when I was freelancing at Ogilvy and they lost AmEx to Chiat. They kept all the files in storage. I asked why. Because it will be back they said. They were right, Chiat fucked up and it was back at Ogilvy in less than two years. It’s been there ever since. I don’t think Chevy will be back at GS+P, but now they’ve cleared the decks… Honda anyone?
Finally, a quote from someone Jeff and I both admire… “Life is a cement trampoline.” Howard Gossage.
