Just over a week ago I posted on the new tack taken by Ty Montague and Michael Lebowitz with their “You Elect the Jury” spin on the upcoming Andy Awards. Now, ‘cos I am a fucking prince, I am going to post Ty’s response to me. Never forget, unlike some other fucktards out there, I always give equal time to people who want to express their point of view. Plus, ‘cos Ty is a mate, he will now have to get me liquored up next time I’m in New York. Here goes…
Elect The Jury is very much an experiment. It came out of a realization that Michael Lebowitz of Big Spaceship, my Co-Chair, and I had when thinking about the Andy’s and future of awards shows. The industry is changing incredibly quickly. Yet awards shows have stayed pretty much the same and are judged by a group of mostly senior, mostly traditional ad people. The alternative model that some shows have tried has been to spin a “digital” or “interactive” show off as a separate entity. Both Michael and I believe that the future of our business will be discovered by traditional brand storytellers, software designers, strategists and social media experts working together in close collaboration. So we decided to try to crowd source the jury from a broad swath of the creative and technology industries. We intentionally included “outliers” in our original nominations. People from tangential businesses and pursuits that the ad business (music, art, television) needs to get better at collaborating with.
OK… This is only part one of Ty’s response. So far I agree with the idea of casting the net wider, but I’m not so sure about the methodology. Too many chances to have wankers, tosspots and douchenozzles passing judgment on a bunch of ads for tattoo parlors that never ran. However… Part two will follow before you can choke on your next beer.
Do they give awards for huge bonuses?
