Typical McCann fuck up - but of course they had Casey Jones in the SF office before his Dell fiasco.

You're absolutely spot on George. I've seen social media deliverables in briefs even when there's no chance that the "real" target audience will ever come across it. It's all for the most part a trend and the brands and their hapless agencies are as clueless as I've ever seen them. Fucking fucktard, douchenozzles. That should be the official sign off.

not sure anyone is suprised? mccan had a partially retarded republican running the account. a george w bush, lock stepping, pro-life anti-ideas, anti-anything smart, douche. tom baggot was always going to help lose the account, it was just a matter of time.

off topic

any confirmation about the Dell/Enfatico dust up?

Nancy...
Don't get me started on Tom Baggot!
Cheers/George

Today's news on the Intel account in Asia. I guess the open source rumours was a preamble to the firing:

http://www.brandrepublic.asia/Media/newsarticle/2009_01/Intel-confirms-open-source-model-for-Asian-agencies/33986

agencies, when faced with the overwhelming amount of heads of state they have to deal with, will always over-think, over-reduce and under deliver because it becomes not a matter of communicating an idea but appeasing someone you have to report to. and in most cases, that's the guy/girl in the corner office not the client.

all the arguments are already in place for failure, tried and tested thru years of use: "it's their account", "they know the client", "we hired them for their experience"...

and yet accounts keep getting pooched, clients keep getting unhappier resulting in spend reduction, and good ideas keep getting shot down in favor of personal favorites or internal relationships bordering on incest.

that's why the model has change and damn quickly...

case in point: back to ogilvy for a second...
if the group heads were told they had to cut 20% this last round, where is the death toll in chris wall's group? IBM has certainly, by all accounts, reduced their spending, so? where are the cuts? my point? not to hit on chris, but yet another head of state to be appeased...

I think the lesson here is, sooner or later you're gong to get fired. Better to be fired on your feet than on your knees.

Let's get this right for the SEO folks, it's Tom B-A-G-O-T. U forgot to mention MRM Worldwide.

Well, this at least partially explain why Bagot was shown the door.

This simply could not have happened to a more deserving agency and management.

My sources tell me that in the months leading up to Bagot's dismissal, HR had to get involved because of some contretemps. Really, how does an ECD run a multimillion dollar account when no one will work for him and things are so bad that HR has had to step in?

Joyce, you could have fixed this problem eons ago, but you chose to keep a bad manager in a key position.

But let's be fair. Intel has always been a shitty account. Messner has a vested interested in disagreeing, but honestly, can anyone on this board recall a decent Intel spot, let alone campaign? I remember a funny one a decade ago using Homer Simpson (borrowed interest), and a sort of smart one involving loading bars overlaid on live action, but that's a pittance compared to the years of Blue Door/Blue Man Group/Lap Sitting/Talking Chip dreck that was foisted onto the world. If, as some lefty pundits would have us believe, advertising is pollution, Intel as a client is certainly the Love Canal.

In the end, Bagot's managerial failing was that he was the client's waiter. Expediency was his master. When push came to shove, he would default to the same old solutions, call creatives and account people "stupid," and complain about how he had to 'do everything himself.'

really steve? when will that happen to david apicella, the guy that hasn't won business in years and lost business along the way? or the sliver shadow, bill gray? or any of the many others that make the decisions that others get fired for?

as for the mccann debacle(s), i was at some of the early meetings for INtel and let me tell you, no one was more out of the loop than cranin, the uber creative head... he just kept bringing up "leadership thoughts" that were rehashes of campaigns other companies had done and saying "well, it doesn't have to be that exactly, but something close to that..." talk about fraud begets fraud.... when does he get his? he works for Fenton Communications:

http://tvdecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/07/meet-me-on-the-corner-of-madison-ave-and-pennsylvania-ave/

i really think it is rare for any leader to step up and say "i fucked up, i will pay" these days... as the old adage warns us:

shit rolls downhill...

I hated the Blue Man stuff too, but that shit worked. They were branding spots and the recall on it was ridiculously high. In fact, that musical sting was one of the most recalled pieces of music of all time.

They better hope that a certain gun enthusiast doesn't go postal.

@LD—

Cranin. Shit, you're right. Forgot all about him. Who was that English account guy with the socks?

Who is Steve?

"Never give a client want they want, give them what they need." YES! YES! YES! I'm a huge pain the ass to my little clients, but I will go to the mat in trying to get them to do the right thing! And they respect me for it...and if they dont, fire me! You are right on....

shit hit the fan long agon when mccann didnt return $$$ due intel as per contract. part of ipg earnings restatement fiasco.

@tld - "i fucked up, i will pay"

Forget management, it’d be nice to hear that from someone mid-level and below. ;-p

"Clients get they advertising they deserve." No truer words were spoken, especially on tech business.

Microsoft, Intel, Oracle. Sun Micro. All their work has sucked forever.

McCann may suck, but they know the tech game. The Client is going to get exactly what they want regardless. You know how much talent came through the doors at McCann SF? Considerable amounts, spent some time on MS, and then got out as fast as they could.

Bagot might not have been a talent, but no one with talent could work on that shit without putting a gun in their mouth.

And someone forgot to tell Cranin that the Mastercard campaign broke in 1997 ('96?). They are STILL running that thing, and it's starting to smell like old feet.

And yes, I know he's gone. But I doubt his shortness ever impressed Clients with his tech work.

You can't entirely blame Bagot. Let's not forget Bill Oberlander used to be co-creative director on that blight-of-an-account. Guess he spent too much time on the tanning bed, rather than figuring out the right way forward...Waah, waah, waah, waaaaaah...

Something you Clowns may not be aware of, but firings at Y&R have been ongoing. They don't make the trades because higher ups have been instructed by the poisoned Dwarf to do it in small batches so as to not alert the Media.
Gone are 2 recently hired CDs and 3 new business honchos who did not perform.
I know because I see and hear all the meetings through preview monitors in the conference center I run.
It aint pretty it's a quiet and insidious process.

@ paul: names and a running tab of hits?

@ bg: forget it, no says "i messed up" anymore, not part of the culture! seriously, i would rather get fired, for something i screwed so at least i know i did something warranting the termination.

to be cut because a spreadsheet said so? that's harsh. i know that it's basically the spreadsheet that determines what amount gets cut from a group and then it's a popularity contest, but it's still instigated by the numbers game rather than a merit system...

Hey Rick Derringer (aka Tom Bagot),

Hahahaha you fuck. You finally got what u deserve. Everyone that ever had to work for you is applauding.

"Yes, CP+B is definitely a BDA, and if you don’t agree with me… Go fuck yourself." George, I just spit my starbucks on my mac laughing my ass off. Thanks for always keeping it _realler_.
