Interesting to read in mediabuyerplanner that Obama will probably try to do something about the out of control DTC advertising we are increasingly subjected to. In my next book, The Ubiquitous Persuaders, I have a whole chapter devoted to drug and health care advertising, which when you look into it is fucking huge, with BDA's pulling in billions to produce ads that only a fucktard, or a drug company CEO, could love. Did you know that the US is the only country on the face of the planet that allows the advertising of prescription drugs? Every time Congress tries to do something about it, the fucking pharma and health care lobbyists come out of the woodwork like a bunch of cockroaches. Which is just one more reason why the health care system (what system?) in this country is so fucked!

Watch out with calling for a limit to what can be advertised and how. I went to one of those bullshit ad conferences a while ago. 90% bullshit as expected but I did take away one important lesson.
Dont let anyone ban advertising. The case study was tobacco. Lots of people, including many in advertising, thought it was a great idea. They thought it was no big deal. Smoking is bad so well let em ban that and go on with our business.
Of course it didnt stop there. The ink wasnt even dry on the tobacco bans when the same lawyers, smelling more giant billings, started looking for the next big bad ad category. So now we have fast food and drugs and what all on the block for banning or restriction.
Hows about some personal fucking responsibility? Do you smoke and drink because of all the awesome fucking ads out there? Parents shouldnt feed their kids McDonalds every other meal. Hypochondriacs should buy a DVR and skip the ads.
Were letting fucking lawyers get rich by screwing the ad biz, fucked up as that is, granted, out of shit to advertise.
