Remember when AgencySpy used to be a good AdBlog?
Hey... Is it just me, or is AgencySpy becoming increasingly fucked ever since it moved onto the main Media Bistro site? Not only can you not sign up for feeds, but you can't even leave comments... And listen Babe, comments are the life blood of a good blog even if they kick the shit out of you... 'Cos that's part of life's rich tapestry! Even worse, some of the subject matter is starting to get rather lame. The post today about an ex JWT CD working at Starbuck's is about five months late. The book has been a best seller since August. He's been interviewed on every fucking TV and Radio program in the universe... It's old and boring. But... OK, I have to admit, maybe I'm a bit pissed since you created the "No Shit List to end All Lists." Supposedly to get the opinions of big time Ad Wankers and "A-List Blogger's!" And didn't even ask me for my list!!! Particularly as today's NSLTEAL... Sounds like it was written by me, what with all the references to Draft/FCB and Julie Roehm.... But believe me, it wasn't. And I don't want any AdScam readers to think that it is... 'Cos I don't do anything anonymously. I put my name on everything I fucking write. So, hey Spy... Get your act together, both in terms of the interactivity of your site, and also in terms of content... If we want to know who has picked up, or lost various accounts... We can always go to AdAge.com. Even worse, all that stuff about GM car sales, or Christmas retail sales are on every fucking page of the MSM. If you insist on posting general news, do it when it's news. I posted about Microsoft getting down to Fallon and CP+B on the 21st, you posted about it today, the 26th. You're supposed to be an Ad Gossip site, so foget week old news and dish the dirt, that's what your readers want. Or, is the problem with that that you will probably get a wrist slap from MediaBistro? Sorry to do this as a post on AdScam... But you can't make comments on AgencySpy, otherwise I would have done it there. Think about what makes a great blog... Content... Clarity.. . Transparency... And above all... Feedback. All this with the best of intentions. Cheers/George
Hello... AgencySpy? I'm about to put my foot in my mouth!

Maybe they've gotten too damn big for us now like Seth Godin's blog. Can't leave comments there either.

It's not that... trust me on this.. Agency Spy isn't happy with it... got a steady cursing over IM when I asked her 'how's it going with the move'. heh..
Also worth noting TribbleAgency.com is reporting that Icrossing got their Wikipedia page deleted... with wikipedia calling them spammers or something.

If you want to be sure to leave a comment on Seth Godin's site that gets uploaded or loaded for that matter,
just say:
"Another brilliant Seth Godin idea."
Your name will shortly be up in digits, if not lights.
Seth is actually a pretty good market historian and synthesizer, but blogmeister he ain't.

@Tom: Ha! That's so true of so many of the more popular 2.0-ish blogs - I often feel that Godin or Jaffe could post "Today is Thursday" and 5 people would comment "Brilliant insight!"
I suspect the commenters are just as interested in getting their own names up in lights as they are in making a point.
@GP: I often wonder if Ms. A. Spy isn't getting a bit of pressure from her corporate sponsors at MediaBistro to diversify out of being a pure gossip center. Or it could just be she's still finding her legs as a blogger- what is it she really wants to focus on? There just may not be enough agency gossip going around to keep a whole blog going and the tips she gets may be too granular to make a post out of (e.g. two junior media planners at Grey hooked up after a party one night)
It'll be interesting to see where she lands, since she's one of the few (if not the only) ad blogger working for someone other than themselves or their agency.

Given that it’s a slow news week, I’d be very interested in learning more about the junior media planners at Grey.

I can’t argue with the Zen-like minimalist beauty of this:
‘Tiger Bites Man’
Almost as good as the classic NY Post headline ‘Headless corpse in topless bar‘ years ago:

I go back and forth on the comments on blogs thing. I don't think as a blog owner you have to respond to everyone, but at least let people comment for their own sake.
On the other hand, from a traffic POV though, only allowing trackbacks works like a charm.
Provided of course you have to have something to say that’s worth tracking back to.
;-p

Well, in Agency Spy’s defense, she has been working with mediabistro to address the comments issue at the new blog, as well as other things. At least that’s what the posts have indicated. Seems like mediabistro didn’t quite realize the full needs when they moved the blog.

(Too much egg nog for me, I posted part of my rant on the wrong topic.)

Guys...
Many thanks for the comments... I was overly harsh on "Spy" and have eaten humble pie on a later post. She's a great girl, and I have advised her to kick MeadiaBistro in the goolies.
Cheers/George

Truth be told - everyone is right. Mediabistro is working to get the blog totally functional (ie comments, full RSS feeds, clear permalinks, etc.). We slacked this month due to total frustration and (less so) the holidays.
@Tom - It's true. Sea legs? Gotta get them and George, by posting his commentary, has helped us out.
Hell, when we get the comments back up - we'd love to hear what you guys thing... Gossip? Commentary? Trends? Ad reviews? Accounts wins? Maybe all of the above. Stay tuned.

(I should also clarify, I was referring to Martin Calle and his comments re: Seth and the way his blog is set up, not AS and Mediabistro.)
Posted by: bg | December 27, 2007 at 04:34 PM
@AS: That was me who made the comment about the sea legs.
Just for the record and all that.

I think the real question is why there are so many of the sniping blogs to begin with? The reason i have come up with is that there are a lot of frustrated people out there that are unhappy with their lives. Advertising is full of truly creative people. However, at the end of the day, all their energies go to nothing more than selling product. (like the guy who knew who would introduce himself to chicks in bars as "a writer".."oh, what do you write?" "Dog food ads."
It has to be frustrating. One of the ways these people can feel better about themselves is by knocking others in the biz. (no, I have never been targeted, in fact, I am only tangentially in the biz).
If you hate the industry, then get out.
