So, I spent the day (and a few hours afterwords for the cocktails) at the AdAge IDEA conference here in New York. I promised Jonah Bloom, the Editor of AdAge, I would be brutally honest about what I thought of the whole affair, and I intend to do it over a series of posts in the next couple of days. But, a quick few thoughts before I crash. Overall, much better than many other events of this nature I have attended in the last few hundred years. 30% of the content was really great, 30% was interesting and didn't put me to sleep. 40% was the usually boiler plate shit we've all heard before from wankers merely selling themselves and their companies. Worse culprits? BBDO and GE doing a stultifying presentation of why these fucking dinosaurs continue to spend millions and millions of dollars boring the shit out of the Universe talking the usual cliches about "process" and "6Sigma" gateposts and stuff that makes you want to blow your fucking brains out. I'll talk more about it tomorrow when I've sobered up. Particularly the Dave Droga (Yeah, I know, him again)presentation, which was basically a twenty minute presentation of why Droga5 is so fucking great, because it's headed by Dave Droga. Dave... Please don't get me wrong here... I don't think for a minute you are a scumbag like Hughie, Dewey, Louie, or the Poisoned Dwarf or the Wizened of Oz... But, for Christ's sake... Spread the credit around... The people who work for you will appreciate it. It doesn't have to be about making your Mum proud of you for doing a pro bono campaign. More, when I've sobered up in the morning!
