Anyone remember me asking at the end of last year whatever happened to Karen Hughes… Yeah, her? The one Bush crowned as Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in early 2005. Taking over from my favorite “Lady-in-Advertising.” Charlotte Beers. Then Ms. Hughes went on a trip to the Middle East which turned into a fiasco when she assured a room of Saudi women that they too, could someday drive a Humvee, and they all more or less told her to fuck off. Then she tells them President Bush is a man of God (Think Crusader here) which obviously also goes down with the devoutly religious MUSLIM women like a lead balloon. I’m surprised she didn’t invite them to a Texas barbecue with pork ribs at the embassy. Anyway, the good news is that she has recently visited the Philippines to distribute some sewing machine to small businesses and a handful of computers to young girls, who will no doubt take them to school in their newly acquired Humvees. She has also created a “Digital Outreach Team,” to engage the entire Muslim world via a blog. When asked how many people were working on this team, she answered “I think it’s about four or five!” Well, all I can say is, with that kind of laser-like, definitive knowledge and naive, neo-con thinking, the “War On Terror” is just about over!
