No wonder normal people think ad people are idiots!
There was an unbelievable article in the UK’s Independent newspaper last week. It’s all about one of my favorite people… Jonah Bloom… Here’s the headline… “Jonah Bloom: When this man speaks, New York sits up and listens.” - As editor of the Manhattan-based weekly 'Advertising Age', Jonah Bloom is about as influential an Englishman as you'll find in the city. Holy shit… is the person writing this for real… Or is it simply another example of a journalist writing on something they don’t have a fucking clue about? Made worse in this case, ‘cos it’s a journalist writing about a journalist. It goes on a bit about how Jonah can walk on water, and everyone in the business hangs on his every published word… Which is funny, ‘cos everyone I know thinks he’s a dick. But that’s OK, ‘cos that’s how most people think of me. Anyway, read it, it’s good for a laugh.

No... It's journalism!

Good to know journalistic arse-kissing is alive and well in London, as well as our side of the pond. As for Bloom having any kind of clout, most people I know in advertising don't read Ad Age. I can't imagine how the rest of New York would give a damn.
Somewhere in Manhattan, a frame shop is placing the article under glass, ready for mounting on Bloom's wall.

journalist writing about niche journalists, like advertising commentators, is like listening to the losers at the Oscars talk about how great the winners are.

I subscribed to Ad Age for a year when I got it for a dirt cheap price -- it only got skimmed about 95% of the time.
The only interesting part of the whole thing for me what the job section -- so I could network with the people in their new jobs...

Theo... Ouch!!!
Loved that... "Somewhere in Manhattan, a frame shop is placing the article under glass, ready for mounting on Bloom's wall." No doubt with the designer pink mat. Congrats, I think you out-nastied me on that one.

Hey Dan...
Dead on with the subscription junk... They give you the first 13 weeks for free... Then hammer you for the rest. I always love the emails I get from AdAges "Msdison & Vine" about the convergence of entertainment and advertising... i.e. It's all facile. But, if you want a subscription... It's like $399 a year. Jesus, how dumb do they think I am? Don't answer that.

Smartest thing AdAge ever did was to buy Adcritic.com from the (non-industry/ad hobbyist) guy who started it.

did that help them?
i mean, i know it was good for the seller, but in the end, isn't it the same thing as myspace getting bought because it was popular with a demographic and then getting "repurposed" and the end result?
the sellers made a truckload and no one else seems to give myspace a second thought anymore...
