Second Life gets into politics... Groan!
I’ll be honest with you. I don’t really understand what the big deal is with “Second Life!” I know it’s addictive, ‘cos I’ve had a few emails from people who have had serious problems with their partners after they get hooked on either MMORPG’s or Second Life. Both operate on the same principle, which as far as I can see, is if your present life is fucked up; go live a second one in a fantasy world. Hey, if losers want to do that, good luck to them. But, what’s really getting weird is the corporate interest being shown in it, with everyone from Home Depot to Coke opening up “virtual” stores. I’m sure the Web 2.0 pundits could give you a million reasons why you would buy your “virtual” paint with “Linden Dollars” from a “virtual’ store. But when I want to splash it all over my “real” kitchen wall, I’m fucked. Then again, If I live in a “virtual” world, who gives a shit. But the news that Senator John Edwards has opened a campaign headquarters on Second Life leaves me scratching my head. Let’s assume he runs a brilliant “virtual” campaign and all the Second Lifers vote for him. He wins the “virtual” Presidency, but falls on his arse in the “real” race. He gets to be the “virtual” decider, but not the “real” one. I suppose he gets to invade a “virtual” Iran instead of the ‘real” one. Which would save us a lot of money and a lot of dead people. Mmmm… Maybe there’s something to this Second Life after all!
.
This is my "virtual" house. I built it with "virtual" shit from a "virtual" Home Depot!

You really that puzzled, G.
Cost of setting up site is pretty minimal.
And losers and geeks vote.
Seems like a win/win

Wherever there are eyeballs, the persuaders will be there.

How pathetic are we that adults want to spend so much time playing make believe. If we spent as much time trying to improve our actual realities, maybe something would get done around here.

I was thinking that if enough people spend more time in the virtual world than the real world then for the rest of us -The real world will be ours for the taking!!! Here's to my real beach front property!

cfrank: amen to that. i'll be the guy down the road with the real boat in the real marina and the real wife. we can have a real barbecue and some real old scotch.
theo: sorry man we adults have always lived in world of make-believe, politics, religion, advertising...they are all extensions of our inner "second life"...that's why we go to bars to talk to the bartenders, our "second friends" so much.
tt: you are out of your depth here, sorry. this is more psychological than market...yes geeks and losers both vote. rarely at the same temporal location. bill gates goes to a voting booth and tries to alter the state of nation, "comic book guy 267" goes to www.StarWarsFaithful.com and votes on the outcome of a battle between JarJar and Princess Leia.
set up sites, like Obama and Hillary, attempt to reach people on this plane of existence. get them to come out of their homes, not reinforce their decision to live like Obi Wan, in solitude, until the Force calls them forth.
