My good friend Edward O'Meara, who I spent many years with at O&M working on the delights of IBM and Lotus, sent me an amusing email today...
"I saw another stupid MS ad today, this one with several Dinosaur’s talking about the security components built into every copy of Office, and how stupid one is for sending an email with salary info to the whole company. Now that I’m over the visual stupidity, I actually read the ad… here’s what we missed the first time!" 1. This is the first time MS mentions security features, probably because security is finally au courant – and odd how they’re tapping into fear rather than control or leadership or other positive attributes. Problem is, their idea of security is still built on Individuals’ making and applying decisions rather than the organization setting and clarifying policies. Maybe the joke is that it’s the Microserf’s wearing the Dinosaur masks, pretending as if they've discovered a killer application by putting on their “enterprise computing hat”. Art imitating life! 2. The idea (how easy it is to email salary info) is the concept O&M used in Lotus ads about 6 or 8 years ago warning everyone NOT to use Microsoft products, or ignore the importance of enterprise security tools. 3. The version of Office currently for sale is still Office 2003, with no update in sight. How does one not think of that as buying backwards into a Dinosaur age? 4. Didja notice they recently removed the 2003 from the Office logo? Gotta sell more of that crap… I wonder how many people will buy a “new” copy of what they already own????
Mmmm… Good points Edward. Hadn't noticed the missing 2003. Is that what they mean by "guerrilla marketing?" As my first Dinosaur post of a couple of days ago got well and truly "Scoblerized," I wonder if this one will get the Micro-Blog treatment? Over to you Mr Scobles.
Shouldn't that be "Working with Dinosaurs?"
